Message Regarding Stem Cell Trial: Update October 28, 2009

On September 21st, 2009 Neuralstem, Inc (www.neuralstem.com) announced FDA approval for a phase I trial of spinal cord derived stem cells as a therapeutic intervention for patients with ALS. The protocol is currently under review by Emory’s Human Investigations Committee. We are also working closely with Neuralstem to finalize the procedures to be used in the trial. The selection criteria for potential participants in the trial have not yet been approved. However, those interested in the trial should understand that this is purely a “safety trial” (phase 1 in medical terminology) to see if injection of cells into the spinal cord is safe in people with ALS. Our plan is to enroll one patient at a time, up to a possible total of 12 patients, to test the safety of the surgical procedure and the cells to be injected.
