Patients
Needed with Depression and
Parkinson's Disease
Emory
University School of Medicine, Department of Neurology is conducting a
research study using transcranial magnetic stimulation and Electroconvulsive
therapy to treat PD/Depression
If you meet the following requirements, then you may be eligible to
participate in this study:
- 40-90
years old
- Diagnosis
of idiopathic PD
- Meet criteria
for depression
- Failure
or intolerance of at least one antidepressant medication. If you have
never tried an antidepressant, we will refer you to a psychiatrist and
be given a trial.
- No recent
history of confusion or substance dependence (other than caffeine or
nicotine)
- Ambulates
independently
- No history
of brain mass, epileptic seizures, stroke, cerebral aneurysm, dementia,
multiple sclerosis, transient ischemic attack within the last two years,
or other major CNS dysfunction
- No cardiac
pacemakers, cochlear implants, or other intracranial implants with the
exception of dental fillings
- No acute,
unstable medical conditions which require stabilization prior to treatment
There are two phases to this study lasting 8 to 9-weeks. Patients will
stay in the General Clinical Research Center at Emory University Medical
Center and will receive rTMS treatments twice daily for 10 days. If
your depressive symptoms do not improve after rTMS, you will be offered
the opportunity to receive ECT treatments. There will also be three
overnight visits for follow-up testing.
