Chinese Exercise in Parkinson's Disease Emory University School of Medicine, Department of Neurology is conducting a research study assessing Chinese exercise modalities in patients with Parkinson's disease. If you meet the following requirements, then you may be eligible to participate in this study:
YES/NO CRITERIA (a "no" answer is exclusionary) 1. Does the patient have idiopathic Parkinson's Disease? 2. Is the patient between 40 and 85 years old? 3. Is the patient Hoehn & Yahr stage III or less in the "on" state? 4. Does the patient have a positive response to dopaminomimetics and has he/she been on a stable dose of these medications for the past month? 5. Are the patient's PD symptoms optimally treated and are the medications expected to remain stable for the next 4 months? 6. Is patient free of a major and active psychiatric problem? 7. Is the MMSE score > or = 24?
1. Does the patient have features suggestive of atypical Parkinson's disease (e.g., autonomic failure, cerebellar signs, lack of response to levodopa)? 2. Does the patient have a known intolerance to a dose of 150 mg of levodopa? 3. Does the patient have clinically significant peripheral neuropathy involving loss of deep tendon reflexes (other than ankle jerk) or clinically significant distal sensory loss? 4. In the last year, has the patient had any symptoms that would preclude him from participating in aerobic exercise training? Examples of these include: unexplained syncope, clinically significant orthostatic hypotension, active angina, CHF or CABG within the last year. 5. Is the patient totally dependent on assistive devices for ambulation? Partial dependence is acceptable so long as they can stand or walk 100 meters without assistance when on. 6. Has the patient participated in an experimental drug or device trial in the last 30 days? 7. Is the patient engaged in a regular exercise program that meets more than twice per week? Regular stretching exercises and water exercises do not count. 8. Is the patient pregnant?
